Responsibilities and Authorities of the Library Board

… to protect and advance the interests of the broader community by effectively governing the operations and promoting the development of the public library.

The Kiel Public Library Board of Trustees is a decision-making team charged with specific powers and duties spelled out in Section 43.58 of the Wisconsin Statutes. The KPL Board of Trustees Bylaws and the Wisconsin Public Library Trustee Manual provide additional guidelines for the responsibilities and authority of the Library Board. The Board’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Exclusive control of all library expenditures.
  • Purchasing of a library site and the erection of the library building when authorized.
  • Exclusive control of all lands, buildings, money, and property acquired or leased by the municipality for library purposes.
  • Supervising the administration of the library and appointing a librarian.
  • Prescribing the duties and compensation of all library employees.

Board meetings are generally held the first Tuesday of every month at 3:30 p.m. in the library’s downstairs meeting room. Agenda are posted in the library and at City Hall at least 24 hours prior to every meeting. All meetings are open to the public unless otherwise noted on the agenda.
